Alice in Wonderland

charcoal pencil—27″ x 21″

These two drawings were done from iPhone shots, so I had to wait for quite a long stretch to take the photos until there were no kids sitting on Alice’s lap. The sculpture is by Jose de Creeft, having been commissioned by the philanthropist George Delacorte. It graces the north end of Central Park’s sailboat pond. It’s said that the depiction of the Mad Hatter was a caricature of Delacorte, surely an impressive demonstration of the sculptor’s unwillingness to flatter his patron. The drawing at the right was exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in November, 2020, where it was presented with a Merit Award.
